Flower courtyard contest, Spain

Fiesta de los Patios de Córdoba

For two weeks each May, families in Córdoba's old town open their courtyards, hung with hundreds of pots of flowers, to visitors and to the judges of the city's patio contest.

How it works

  • About fifty patios compete each year, in four categories: old architecture, modern architecture, singular patios and convent patios.
  • The jury looks at the variety of flowers, the care of pots and beds, and natural light. Only seasonal flowers may be used.

History

The first contest for patios, balconies and shop windows was called in 1921. The festival took its present form in the 1950s and was recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage in 2012.
