Flower carpet competition, Italy

Infiorate di Spello

On the night before Corpus Domini, teams in the Umbrian town of Spello lay carpets and pictures made only of petals and herbs along the procession route, about a kilometre and a half of them, and a jury judges them at dawn.

How it works

  • Groups design their carpets in advance and lay them through the night, using only plant material: petals, flowers and herbs.
  • Entries compete as pictures, figurative carpets, geometric carpets or in an under-14 class. A single carpet can run 12 to 15 metres.
  • A technical jury awards the Trofeo Properzio, a bronze statuette, and the infioratori themselves vote for the Premio Daniele Ciampetti.

History

Decorating the route goes back to the early 1900s; the competition grew from a simple design copied by neighbours around 1930. 2026 was the 63rd contest.
