Madeira Flower Festival

Each spring Funchal fills with flowers for the Festa da Flor. The parade itself is not judged, but the festival includes a long-running competition for the island's growers.

The flower competition

  • The judged part of the festival is the regional flower exhibition, in its 71st edition in 2026.
  • Growers show cut stems and potted plants: 52 competitors showed 821 specimens in 2026, and 87 prizes were awarded.
  • A five-member jury judges colour, foliage, flower, vigour and size, and for potted plants the overall harmony.

The parade

The allegorical flower parade, part of the festival since 1979, brings flower-decorated floats and nearly two thousand performers to the city's seafront avenue. It is a show rather than a contest.
