Flower show competition

Philadelphia Flower Show

Run by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society since 1829, the Philadelphia Flower Show fills the city's convention centre each spring. Professional florists stage large floral exhibits for medals, and amateurs and garden clubs compete in hundreds of classes.

How the floral exhibits are judged

  • Professional floral exhibits are large staged designs, scored on a points scale: gold for 90 to 100 points, silver for 80 to 89 and bronze for 65 to 79.
  • The top floral prize is the PHS Cup for Best in Show, Floral.
  • Amateurs, garden clubs and schools enter competitive classes for arrangements, botanical arts, pressed plants and larger design exhibits, alongside thousands of plant entries.

History

The show was first held in 1829 and is often described as the oldest and largest indoor flower show in the world. It moved to the Convention Center in 1996 and was held outdoors in 2021 and 2022. In 2019 it hosted the floristry World Cup.
