Sylvia Cup Design Competition

Held on stage at the Society of American Florists' annual convention, the Sylvia Cup gives every competitor the same flowers and supplies and two hours to answer a surprise brief.

How it works

  • Up to twenty contestants receive identical flowers, foliage and hard goods.
  • The theme and the pieces to make are revealed on the day. In 2026 the theme was a night at the Copacabana and the pieces were a headpiece, a memorial piece and a centerpiece. In 2025 an outer-space theme called for a bridal bouquet, a sash and a memorial arrangement.
  • Commentators explain the work to the audience as it happens, and a panel of judges scores the finished pieces.

History

SAF calls it the longest-running live floral design competition in the United States. The 2026 contest was the 57th.
